MY DANCING SHOES

Dancing has always been a passion.  I took my first dancing class at age 4 and continued with classical dance for several years.  It was a small school and as a member of the school ballet, I had two performances, one at the University of Puerto Rico and the second one at a children's TV program.  The outfits were beautiful, custom made by my mother's seamstress.  I was enjoying dancing and I was very engaged in the classes.  But my father didn't like all that dancing agenda.   Back in those days, no parent wanted her daughter to be a dancer.  So I was taken out from dancing school with the excuse that I was growing up and I needed to dedicate more time to school.

During my childhood I used to watch my mother roll up her skirt way up to her panties and dance rumba around our living room.  She imitated Tongolele, a famous rumba dancer in those days.  Showing off her legs, shaking her butt and skillfully moving her hips from one side to the other, I think I can say today that my mom was a good rumba dancer.  Once she started dancing, then my aunt, who always lived with us, joined her.  I never danced rumba with them, but I enjoyed standing in one corner watching my mom and my aunt dance rumba like two maniacs with the volume of the hi-fi very loud.

Years later and on two occasions, I put together a couple of dances for school graduations.  I remember teaching La Tarantela, a folkloric Italian dance that I had learned in dancing school.  The school kids met at my home and we rehearsed for several hours.  For another school program, I choreographed a Square Dance, which I danced with a cute kid in my neighborhood.

Then in high school, when we were studying the culture of different countries, I danced El Jarabe Tapatio to represent Mexico.  After that, not much dancing.

Ironically, I married a man that didn't dance at all.  Not even a bolero.  Fortunately, we were close friends with a couple who decided to open a dancing school in San Juan.  I joined the school to support their new business, but mainly I was thrilled to get back into dancing.

Everything was going fine, until one day I got home all bruised.  My husband didn't like that at all. What happened was that for the first time, I took a lifting class with a male dancer. Those easy and stylist lifts that we all see at the ballet performances are not easy at all.  It's hard for the guy and hard for the woman.  It requires tons of practice and it can be physically painful.  Anyway, that was my one and only lifting class and I was fine with that.

As an adult, the passion for dancing continued. After my divorce, I moved to Los Angeles and, surprisingly for me, salsa was very popular.  I became a party animal and did a lot of salsa at Latin clubs in LA.

Throughout the years, and just for the fun of it, I took different dance classes at community colleges or with private instructors. Prior to moving to Las Vegas, I was taking flamenco.

I hear music and I can't stand still.  My body automatically moves to the beat whether I am at home, in my car, at a store, etc.

To clarify, I am not saying here that I am a good dancer.  I'm just saying that dancing was always part of my life.  I no longer dance or go to dance clubs.  These days I only do Zumba twice a week at the gym.  Zumba has been the greatest invention:  it's fun, you get to dance different rhythms and you burn lots of calories.  It cannot get any better than that.

Dance can express ideas, emotions or tell a story.  Not only you dance with your body, you dance with your face, you dance with your heart.  You are a character.  For example, the face expression of a flamenco dancer is distinctly different from the face of a hip hop dancer or a tango dancer.  Also, many dances can be sensual and sexy.  If performed artistically, they can elevate an audience.

In closing, I'm not done with dancing.  At one point, I intend to go back to school to continue Flamenco, my old-time favorite.  Just for the fun of it.

I love music and dancing.  I am fortunate to have a broad taste for music and the same translate to dancing. From ballet to reggaeton and from Mozart to urban music, I love it all.

Dancing, music and rhythm are in my DNA.  I was born with it and I will die with it. Every time I look at a very old, wrinkled lady dancing, in my mind I'm thinking,'that will be me when I am that age.'  Not that I'm too far from being there. :)

See you at my next post.  One, two, three, cha cha cha.

ELLIS ISLAND CASINO & BREWERY

Ellis Island Casino & Brewery
4178 Koval Lane
Las Vegas, NV
(directly behind Bally's on the Strip)

Today I visited for the first time Ellis Island Casino and Brewery.  I loved it. When you enter this place is like having a flashback of old style Vegas.  As much as I like the mega hotels and all the technology on the Strip, for me there's nothing like visiting these little gems that make us nostalgic of the old days.

Amenities at Ellis Island include over 350 gaming machines (low key casino) several restaurants, a micro-brewery, karaoke lounge and free parking, among others.  The restaurants are notorious for the great food, generous portions and the low prices.

Today I went to their famous BBQ restaurant.  This is a very small restaurant and there's no menu because all they serve is BBQ chicken and ribs.  The barbecue was wonderful, generous portions and the price was even better.  Delicious and cheap - this is my kind of place.

THE THINGS THAT I DO TO MAKE EXTRA MONEY

I always welcome easy ways to make extra money, who doesn't, right?

Well, today I will share with you how I will make $720, part time, in the next two months.

I have been asked to participate in a clinical research study sponsored by a pharmaceutical company (I can't disclose the name for confidentiality reasons).  The purpose of this study is to test a patch and to see if the patch causes irritation to the skin when applied multiples times to the same area. This study will also evaluate whether a skin rash will develop, they call it sensitization reaction.  Approximately 270 adults,18 to 64 years of age will participate in this study at different clinical facilities. Fifty one people will be participating in my group.

To be eligible, you must attend a screening visit. Very simple. They just check your blood pressure, a urine test, and they ask you numerous questions about your medical history.  Although simple, a lot of people that were there with me, did not pass this test.  You also need to sign some waivers and a consent stating that you are doing this voluntarily.

Obviously, they provide you with specific instructions that you should follow.  For example, avoiding the use of oils, lotions or creams around the site of the patches, avoiding steam baths, hot-tubs, swimming and excessive soaking or wetting of the patch.

Once you pass the screening test, you are given a series of appointments and all it takes is getting to your appointments on time.  In their lab, they will place a patch on one of your arms and at your next appointment they will remove it, observing the area where the patch was placed and around the patch.  Then they will place a new patch and the procedure will repeat at each visit.

The research starts in May and will end in mid-June with a two-week break in June.  The appointments are scattered during the two months.  One week you may have two appointments and another week three or just one.  Each appointment will take approximately a maximum of two hours.

The pay works like this:

If you complete the entire study, you will be paid $445.00. At the end of each visit you will be eligible for $20 as a partial payment of your total study payment. The remaining study payment is given at the conclusion of the final visit. You will also receive a bonus of $75 if you complete the study and follow all their regulations.  If you complete Part 2 of the study, you will be paid another $200.

The catch is, well it's really not a catch, that you must timely attend all your scheduled appointments.  If you miss one appointment, you are disqualified. As we all know, things happen, so not all the people that was originally accepted will complete the study. Other people will want to leave the study for whatever reason.  At any rate, you will be paid an appropriate amount based on the extent of participation.

Yesterday was my screening appointment and today was my first visit to get my patch.  It took close to 4 hours because they had to collect urine samples again and review one more time our medical history.  My only complaint so far is that they should have told us that we were going to have another urine test today.  I say this because I didn't drink any liquids precisely because I didn't want to use their bathroom.  So after being in line for a while, when it was my turn, I entered the bathroom and  - n a d a.  It's hard to pee when you have not drunk any liquids and even harder when you have a nurse in the bathroom staring at you during the process.  Obviously, I didn't seat on that toilet, so you can imagine the scenario, me trying to pee, nothing coming out and a nurse standing there waiting for me.

I was a little concerned that I would miss the study because I could not provide my urine sample.  The nurse kindly asked me to go to the seating area and to drink a lot of water since the line was very long and I still had time. I did that, but felt embarrassed about my inability to pee.  I also was was a little mad because I felt that was something they had to tell us the day before.  Then I realized that a few other people had the same problem. Things were going slowly, so about two hours later, I was able to provide my urine sample.  I was never so happy to pee in my life.

They offered lunch - a Subway sandwich and a soda. I was lucky that I was not hungry because all the sandwiches were ham sandwiches in white bread and I don't eat that. This is another area where I think there's room for improvement. With so many different sandwiches that Subway has, to just bring ham sandwiches assuming that everybody likes ham, was a wrong assumption.

The staff was friendly and accommodating and very appreciative of our participation in the study. There were all sorts of people, all races and gender, but I could tell the majority were low income people. Everybody behaved well and patiently waited to be called.  Some people were reading, others texting, some talking to each other and some were just seating quietly.

When I saw the first person that came out with the patch on her arm, I was surprised to see that it was bigger than I had anticipated.  Below the patch, they make a square with tape, so, basically, it's almost like having two patches.  I will have to wear short leave blouses until June, otherwise everywhere I go people will be asking me "what's that?"

Although on the surface, this study seems to be simple, it does have a number of appointments on different days and hours, so to do this, you need a very flexible schedule.

Today, I got my first $20, success!  They pay you in cash and ask you to sign a receipt.  By then I was so hungry that I used part of the money to pay for my dinner.

I think this is a cool way of making a little extra money.  There's no medication on the patch, so there is no risk of secondary effects.  Of course, not all studies are this simple.  I remember that last year this same people called me for one study that paid $3,000.  Sounds fantastic right?  Well, I didn't think so.  Some days, I had to stay overnight at their facility and eat strictly what they served me.  No problem, for $3000 I was willing to do that.  The major problem was that the study required multiple blood draws, sometimes twice a day, and I knew that I could not handle that.  So, I told them that I was not available. I am terrified of needles.  Just having a blood test once a year during my physical exam is more than enough.

Well, I'll see how this goes for me.  I hope that I don't get any skin reaction from the patch and that nothing happens that will prevent me from completing my study.  If something happens, oh well, I have nothing to lose.  I like new experiences and this one will be just that.  For now, all I know is that whenever I pass by a mirror at home and see my patch, I laugh at myself thinking about the strange things that I do.

Take a look at my patch.

CINCO DE MAYO PARTY IN LAS VEGAS (2012)

Cinco de Mayo is a popular celebration in Las Vegas.  The hotels on the Strip as well as the local clubs get very crowded, some sold out.  There are many home parties all around town as well.

For this Cinco de Mayo I was invited to a party at the home of my friend Peggy.  I was so excited about this party because Peggy is the best hostess in town.  When you are going to one of Peggy’s party, you know for sure that you will have an extraordinary time.

Peggy puts a lot of effort to create the most enjoyable time for her guests.  All her parties have a theme and a uniqueness of its own.  For this Cinco de Mayo party, it was no different.

There were approximately 70 guests.  The beautiful house is centrally located in a historic neighborhood of Las Vegas.  It’s in a gated community with a security guard inside a little booth.  You need to give him your name and say the magic words:  “I’m going to Peggy’s party.”  He’ll check the list provided by Peggy and voilá the gate opens to a spectacular residential community.

In spite of so many people, the house didn’t feel crowded.  The house is big and it has a large, beautiful patio with an inviting swimming pool.   Most people were outside enjoying a perfect-weather day and the views of the gorgeous patio.  The house and patio were tastefully decorated with the Mexican flag colors and Mexican accessories.

A DJ entertained us with latin music which kept me dancing by myself where I was standing.  Too bad there were no male salsa dancers because I would’ve loved to dance salsa.  The music was so contagious that after a while the girls got the rhythm and started dancing by themselves.   Every now and then the music was rotated from latin to other dancing rhythms.

As we enjoyed ourselves, the waiter was going around the tables offering Margaritas obtained from a Margarita machine that Peggy rented.

Everybody brought a Mexican dish to share.  Since I don’t cook or bake, I brought a Tres Leches cake that I bought at a well known local Mexican market.

Mmm, the smell from the variety of Mexican dishes reminded us that soon we were going to be indulging in all that food that was sitting on the buffet tables.

And that smell didn’t let us down.  There was so much food, mostly homemade, and it was hard to decide what to get and what to leave on the table.  Needless to say, everything I tried was delicious, I just wished I had more room in my stomach to eat some more and try other things.

In the middle of the afternoon, there was a salsa contest.  The three señoritas that won the contest obtained trophies as a token of appreciation.

It was a such a pleasure to see friends, in such a festive and fun environment.

Just as expected, it was a fantastic party and an unforgettable Cinco de Mayo.

I had a blast.  Good food, great friends, a one-of-a-kind hostess, the DJ, the salsa contest, the margarita machine, -- it couldn’t be any better.  For me, this was the best party in town.

CUANDO SALI DE COLLORES FUE EN...DELTA AIRLINES

Poema: Valle de Collores

Cuando salí de Collores
fue en una jaquita baya,
por un sendero entre mayas
arropás de cundiamores.
Adiós, malezas y flores…

 Luis Llorens Torres

Me casé.

Yo me negaba.

Siempre me he caracterizado por decisiones radicales y rápidas.

Gracias a mi santa madre.
